Food safety management is one of the departments of the newly established institute of food and nutritional sciences (IFNS). Despite the advances in food items processing and production technology, Food safety remains an unachieved goal in most part of the world including Pakistan and is a matter of great concern. Identification of causes of food spoilage or contamination is the key point of producing safe food. Physical, chemical and microbiological hazards are the most important cause of unsafe food. In Pakistan, diarrhea and food poisoning is the most common symptom of food borne along with several other ailments and infections and is often followed by under-nutrition and impairment of the immune system. Food safety has become the focus of attention of international trade discussions. Standards and regulations in developed countries have become very comprehensive and stringent. Several developing countries have also been taking steps to develop new and improved food safety systems to ensure safe food for domestic public as well as to demonstrate compliance with food safety standards in export markets. Today there is a great need for trained manpower in this area. Knowledge of food safety management systems enables organizations with the elements of an effective food safety system in order to achieve the best practice in food safety and to maintain economic goals. Food safety specialists also ensure proper storage and distribution procedures, safe crop-growing practices, and correctly labeled foods. Additionally, they inspect food service businesses for sanitary practices. They are also responsible for disseminating information to the public when food-related diseases occur.
